Hand sanitizers are alcohol-based or alcohol-free solutions used to kill pathogens on the skin, especially on the hands. They play a central role in hygiene, particularly in medical facilities, public spaces, and during times of increased infection risk, such as during a flu epidemic or a pandemic. Most common disinfectants contain ethanol or isopropanol in concentrations between 60 and 80%, as these are effective against bacteria, fungi, and many viruses. It is important to use a sufficient amount and observe the contact time to ensure complete disinfection. Hand sanitizers are a practical complement to hand washing but do not completely replace it, especially with heavily soiled hands.
