Skin disinfectants are used to effectively reduce the microbial load on the skin before medical procedures or injections. They serve to prevent infections and are indispensable, especially in the medical field – for example, in doctors' offices, hospitals, or nursing facilities. Most skin disinfectants are based on alcoholic solutions, which act quickly and have a broad antimicrobial effect against bacteria, fungi, and many viruses. Before operations or the insertion of venous catheters, the skin is thoroughly moistened with a suitable preparation and, after a short exposure time, is considered disinfected. It is important that the disinfectant is well tolerated and does not cause irritation, as it is applied directly to the skin. For certain applications, such as on mucous membranes or in cases of allergic reactions, alcohol-free alternatives are also available. Skin disinfection is an essential part of any safe medical care.
