Instrument disinfectants are used for the hygienic reprocessing of medical and surgical instruments. They serve to safely inactivate pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and in some cases even spores, in order to avoid infection risks for patients and medical staff. These disinfectants are used either in manual immersion baths or in machine cleaning processes. Depending on the requirements and the type of instruments – whether made of metal, plastic, or sensitive materials – special preparations are used that are gentle on materials yet highly effective. Many of these agents contain active ingredients such as aldehydes, amines, or oxidizing agents and are tailored for high cleaning performance and good compatibility with the instruments. Precise dosing, contact time, and temperature according to manufacturer specifications are crucial to ensure effective disinfection. Instrument disinfection is a central component of medical device reprocessing and contributes significantly to patient safety.
