Luer lock and Luer slip (Luer taper) refer to the two common connection types of single-use syringes: with the Luer lock, the needle is firmly screwed on via a thread, whereas with the Luer slip it is simply pushed on. The choice depends on the application, the workflow, and the level of connection security required in the respective practice.

Luer Lock: Screw-On Connection

With the Luer lock connection, the syringe has a cone surrounded by a thread. The needle or supply line is fitted on and screwed into place with a turning motion. This creates a firmly secured connection that cannot come loose accidentally. This connection is frequently chosen when higher pressure acts on the system during use or when a particularly reliable fixation of the connection is desired.

Luer Slip (Luer Taper): Push-On Connection

The Luer slip, also known as the Luer taper, has a plain push-fit cone without a thread. The needle and syringe are joined by simply pushing them together. This allows for quick changes and is common in many routine applications. Both systems are based on the standardised Luer cone, so that syringes and needles from different manufacturers are generally compatible with one another.

Centric and Eccentric Cone, Standardisation

Regardless of the connection type, the cone can be arranged centrically (in the middle) or eccentrically (offset to the side). An eccentric cone makes it easier to position the needle flat against the surface, for example in applications close to the surface.
