The Hygiene & Disinfection category comprises products for the three central application areas in everyday medical practice: hand disinfection, surface disinfection and instrument disinfection. It is aimed at clinics, medical practices, care facilities and aesthetic centres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that procure hygiene articles for professional use within the framework of their hygiene plans.
What to consider when choosing
First select the product according to the application area: preparations for hand disinfection, for surface disinfection or for the reprocessing of instruments are each intended for their specific purpose and are not interchangeable at will. Note the stated spectrum of activity (e.g. bactericidal, levurocidal, limited virucidal or virucidal) as well as the declared contact time. In terms of formats, ready-to-use solutions, concentrates for dilution and pre-soaked disinfection wipes are available. Pay attention to the intended purpose: depending on their classification, disinfectants are either biocidal products or medical devices. How do hand, surface and instrument disinfection differ?
The three areas have different intended purposes. Hand disinfection agents are formulated for application on the skin, surface disinfectants for surfaces and furnishings, and instrument disinfectants for the reprocessing of medical devices. Products should be used in accordance with their designated intended purpose and the manufacturer's instructions.
What does the information on the spectrum of activity mean?
The spectrum of activity describes the microorganisms against which a preparation has been tested, for example bactericidal (against bacteria), levurocidal (against yeasts) as well as limited virucidal or virucidal (against certain viruses). The details given in the product description and the stated contact time are decisive. Testing is usually carried out in accordance with the European standards framework EN 14885.
What information does the VAH listing provide?
A listing with the Association for Applied Hygiene (VAH) refers to the tested efficacy of a preparation under defined conditions. Whether and for which area a product is VAH-listed can be found in the respective product description and in the manufacturer's documentation.
