Swabs and compresses are part of the basic medical equipment in clinics, medical practices, care facilities and aesthetic centres. The category comprises gauze compresses made of cotton, non-woven compresses made of nonwoven material, absorbent compresses as well as swabs in various sizes and ply counts – each available in sterile and non-sterile versions for wound care, cleaning and covering.
What to consider when choosing
The selection depends on the intended use. Gauze compresses made of woven cotton are versatile in use; non-woven compresses are low-lint and soft; absorbent compresses have an absorbent core for more strongly exuding wounds. Decisive criteria are the size (stated in cm, e.g. 5×5, 7.5×7.5 or 10×10 cm), the ply count (for example 8-ply or 12-ply) as well as the folding. Choose between a sterile version for aseptic use and non-sterile goods for cleaning and general applications. What is the difference between sterile and non-sterile compresses?
Sterile compresses are supplied germ-free individually or in peel packaging and are intended for direct contact with open wounds and for aseptic procedures. Non-sterile compresses are suitable for general cleaning, padding and covering tasks where sterility is not required.
What does the ply count mean for compresses?
The ply count (e.g. 8-ply or 12-ply) indicates how many layers of fabric lie on top of one another. A higher ply count generally means greater material density and absorption volume. The appropriate ply count depends on the expected amount of fluid and the area of application.
How do gauze and non-woven compresses differ?
Gauze compresses consist of woven cotton and are an established standard. Non-woven compresses are made from nonwoven fibres, are particularly soft and low-lint and can be shaped well. The choice depends on the area of application, the desired absorbency and the material preference of the facility.
